The winners, selected by the independent panel of judges were as follows:

Research & Development Award
OSIA Research and Development awardWinners: Iain McCulloch and Martin Heeney, Merck KGaA, for the design and synthesis of a new class of high performance organic semiconductors.

The judges considered that the research of McCulloch and Heeney stood out from the other, often very strong entrants in this category, because:
  • it overcame the limitation of current semiconducting polymers
  • it caused a stir in both the academic and industry communities
  • it moved the industry one step closer to making products based on organic electronics a reality
  • the materials are very likely to have a significant impact of the development of the industry

Start-up of the Year Award
OSIA start-up of the year awardWinner: Plextronics Inc

The judges selected Plextronics because the company has shown great technical and commercial progress throughout the past year and has demonstrated the necessary qualities of a good start-up, namely:
  • raising money
  • developing excellent technology
  • finding lead customers
  • having the potential to become a market or technology leader

Peer-Review Paper Award
OSIA best peer review paper awardWinner: Tatsuo Hasegawa, CERC-AIST for the paper "Inkjet printing of organic metal electrodes for contact engineering of Organic Field Effect Transistors".

The judges selected Hasegawa's paper from all those submitted to OEC-06 because it:
  • was an original piece of work on organic metal electrodes
  • described a novel direction to take for source/drain contacts

The 2006 judging panel consisted of:
  • Mark Gostick, Liquavista
  • Chris Smart, Acacia Capital Partners
  • Gail Barnes, TetraPak
  • Dickon Pinner, McKinsey & Co
  • Klaus Hecker, Organic Electronics Association (OE-A)
  • Craig Cruickshank, (panel chair), cintelliq and OSA Direct
The full set of peer-reviewed papers presented at OEC-06 is published by cintelliq, and is available for just £100.00 (+VAT).
