The problem
Patent citation analysis is the process of counting the number of times a patent is referenced, or cited, by
another patent. It is widely used as an indicator of the technology and commercial importance of
intellectual property. Frequently cited patents may be more valuable
than others as they hold a fundamental position for technology development.
Patent citation analysis also provides information about the different patent systems, the linkages
between scientific research and technology exploitation and the transfer of knowledge between
institutions and between different countries.
The solution
The Patent Citations 2004–2005 Focus Report examines the 1,149 patents relating to organic semiconductor technologies
that were granted or published between January 2004 and June 2005 by the European, US, and World patent and trademark offices, and that have citation data.
These patents make 9,822 citations to 6,167 different patents.
This report contains analysis of these 9,822 patent citations, including:
- 25 most frequently cited patents
- 23 patents cited by the largest number of different assignees
- Assignees of patents that cite the three basic OLED patents (from Kodak, Universal Display and Cambridge Display Technology)
- Distribution of cited patents by patent office
